Overview

Strengthening Asia-Pacific Language Teaching – North Asia

Do you teach Chinese-Mandarin, Japanese or Korean in your school?

Would you like to join a network that can support you in this role?

Do you want more practical teaching solutions and ideas based on well-researched theory?

If your answer to these questions is “yes”, then our programme of cluster-based, teacher-led action research is definitely for you!

There are no costs for participants on this programme, as TRDs and travel to workshops are covered by Tui Tuia | Learning Circle - Languages.

Your school will need to agree to one hour of teacher release following each of the two in-school support visits as part of the registration process.

COVID

Because of the uncertainties around travel restrictions, we may be delivering ALL workshops online to all participants, depending on restrictions that are in place at the time the programmes start. Our intention is to have face-to-face workshops; however, we will know nearer the time how possible this will be and will notify participants.

Other components of the programme, such as class visits, will also need to take these possible restrictions into account and so they will be discussed accordingly with those on the programme.

As a result of the lockdowns and the impact of the different levels on schools and teachers, we have added in components of online teaching, using Task-Based Language Teaching, to the current programmes.

In the current environment, the Grant-in-aid of $500 towards language study which is a part of the Strengthening Asia-Pacific Language Teaching – North Asia programme is a huge benefit to teachers, particularly those who may have had the benefit of an MLA up until now, to have another means of language learning and support at this time.

The Strengthening Asia-Pacific Language Teaching – North Asia programme is adaptable, and we have found that teachers, no matter what circumstances they are in, are finding value in this professional learning.

Join the Tui Tuia | Learning Circle - Languages team for a two-term intensive programme, starting in Term 1 and Term 3, including the following:

1st full day Workshop

  • Language as a process - real life language in the classroom
  • Modelling of best practice - followed by reflection and creation of your own resources
  • Turning theory into practice
  • Collaborating with others to create sustainable networks through a cluster inquiry
  • Teacher toolkit - practical tools to apply straight away
  • Support for non-native speakers to select a language course to complete during the two term programme

Online workshops (60 minutes each)

  • Four workshops over the two term programme, after school hours
  • Delivered in the flipped learning model - through podcasts and reading
  • Discussion forum and practical application

  • Follow up discussions with the programme facilitator
  • Progression in teaching pedagogy from visit one to visit two

2nd full day workshop
