On the 4th of May I had the pleasure of collaborating with Future Learning Solutions - Centre for Languages team in the delivery of the first Language Teachers’ Forum this term via Zoom.
The forum started with a few self-introductions and I briefly explained the North Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (NA CAPE) to those who are unfamiliar with the work we do. I really enjoyed meeting with Chinese and Japanese teachers online and the opportunity to better understand their needs in a more pedagogic way.
I was struck by the enthusiasm and level of interest teachers displayed, especially at this challenging time. Despite facing multiple challenges associated with placing whole lesson content online and keeping classes interactive, they were still open to fresh new ideas.
The forum provided the platform to share ideas with these questions:
• What are you currently using to teach students while online? (resources, tools)
• What would be the biggest help to you in your online teaching?
• What ideas do you have for best storage and meet-up possibilities for teachers online going forward?
• What motivation and engagement problems/issues – possible solutions do you have?
Using these questions as a basis for group discussions produced some insightful answers and naturally segued into on-line resources everyone could benefit from in the classroom.
I would like to thank Future Learning Solutions Centre for Languages for the opportunity to participate in this forum and look forward to similar forums in the near future.
